Megatexture and Rage
Well from what I read that RAGE is going on with this thing megatexture a thing with ID Tech 5
MegaTexture aspects this last feature allows the use of high resolution textures, up to 128,000 x 128,000 pixels, without affecting the performance"
I am interested to know how it compares to other games and game engines like CryEngine 3, 5 and chrome engine, etc, etc.
However it does have statistics to compare how much better pixel id Tech 5
And, certainly, any engine uses Metro 2033, and last light rail, cos the game looks awesome to me

It permit the whole thing to look one of its kind, instead of make use of the similar textures over and over. There's no benefit of extra detail though

Re: Megatexture and Rage
The game engine uses a massive texture for all levels ... does not really mean that the textures will be sharp. Most PC gamers probably will complain in the resolution of the texture compared to other games of a few. The main advantage is that megatexture allows artists to apply pixel-level detail to any surface in the game. Basically, there are no repeating textures throughout. Everything will be very unique.
Although the resolution of the texture will be 2x what the consoles have, it is still "fuzzy" until close to us PC gamers

Re: Megatexture and Rage
Why the fuzziness although a lot of games use detail textures to wrap the filtered pixels when close up. Why haven't Id complete that yet?

What he want to say is hopefully will open a package of high-res textures for PC .. it seems that, give up the quality of the texture of the pieces of the map can not see, similar to the tops of buildings, etc.

Re: Megatexture and Rage
Megatexture technology already used in CryEngine 1, 2 and 3. Paint the ground with several layers of texture, bake megatexture editor for you. You can also use a single image for all level, and all baking (shadows, etc) on it if desired. However, CryEngine uses a layer of the texture of repetition in the top of this megatexture (mapping details) so that things are not blurry. This is what id Tech 5 is missing. His "base" are probably MegaTexture higher resolution, but up close you end up looking blurry.

Re: Megatexture and Rage
Texture is always a war between the detail and variety. Consoles bottleneck, especially the possibilities with his paltry 512 MB of RAM, so that console games tend to split the difference between color palettes similar in general to a level with a medium-low level of detail. The detail tends to be overlooked because they tend to move through the levels quickly and (on consoles) that you sit further away from the screen anyway. Also hide these things with different graphical effects (normal maps, particles, explosions, geometry, etc..) But the limitation in the variety means most games will adhere to a narrow color palette (brown-gray-black). Rage Megatexturing / streaming texture or eliminates the upper or greatly improved, and have decided to devote this much to increase the variety of textures, while maintaining the level of detail in the console-level expectations (obviously, I still could not handle wide range and high resolution). It seems that PC gamers will have an optional battery pack, high-resolution texture to go along with it, but the game and 25 concerts, most of the textures, so we can not even imagine how high package texture resolution could be.
