Re: Infrared photography
In infrared photography the film or image sensor used is sensitive to infrared light. The part of the spectrum used is referred to as near infrared to distinguish it from far infrared, which is the domain of thermal imaging. Wavelengths used for photography range from about 700 nm to about 900 nm. Usually an infrared filter is used; this lets infrared (IR) light pass through to the camera, but blocks all or most of the visible light spectrum for more see on wikipedia.org

Re: Infrared photography
There are two possibilities infrared photography in Black & White and color infrared photography. The first is accomplished through a film whose spectral sensitivity, normally limited to the visible spectrum (violet to dark red), is extended into the near infrared, through awareness obtained through chemical molecules developed in the early days of the first half of the 20th century. The second is possible by replacing a layer of normal trichromatic process by another layer sensitive to infrared radiation, causing a so called false color.
