Sun Microsystems unveils its new suite of office applications StarOffice 9.0, which will carry several new features and promises full compatibility with Mac OS X.

Last week we noted that Google decided to abandon the distribution of StarOffice in Google Pack, and it appears that this coincides with the release of the new version of the suite bureatique.

With a redesigned interface with new icons, StarOffice 9.0 now includes the email client Thunderbird with the Sunbird calendar in the form of extending Lightning. In addition to the various tools StarOffice Writer, Calc, Impress, Base and Draw, this new version includes a PDF file editor, an account manager reports and features to publish to weblog and wiki.

StarOffice 9.0, which is already compatible with the ISO standard Open Document, adds support for Office Open XML (OOXML) and provides compatibility with files created through Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac. Indeed, having published a first beta for Mac OS X last August, following now works natively on the Apple system.

Jim Parkinson, vice president of development at Sun Microsystems said: "I work in the computer industry for over 25 years and I've never been so proud today"
